GAU Canterbury Summer Design Program – Final Presentation 26 August 2010

Interdisciplinary Design Students showed their ‘live’ project work to Porchlight clients and GAU guests from their Canterbury service-learning, ‘vertical’ studio directed by Associate Professor Marga Jann, RIBA, AIA, DPUC, NCARB this past summer.
Porchlight is one of the ‘foremost charities supporting vulnerable and homeless people’ in Kent. Yus Tunkara, Strategic Manager for Porchlight, said, ‘The project gives the students an opportunity to apply their skills to a real life project and have a real human impact. At Porchlight we are committed to making sure our supported accommodation is welcoming and recognised for offering much more than just a roof over someone’s head. We are very pleased to have the students’ innovative design ideas and valuable input on this.’

Advanced architecture students developed schemes for GAU-Canterbury future campus expansion needs, in particular façade and landscaping studies for a nearby office building (Newingate), an adaptive re-use project. Advanced Interior Design students worked on a restaurant for the top of the building which has a stunning view of Canterbury Cathedral (rendering by Irfan Gül). Guest critics/client representatives during the term included GAU Vice Chancellor Ron French, PhD, Rachel Holliday, Deputy Chief Executive of Porchlight,
and Karl Elliott of Clague Architects.
‘Thanks for organising the presentations for us today. They were all very good and I congratulate the students - they have all clearly worked very hard and I was impressed at how well they were able to present despite the fact that they are still learning English!’ --Rachel Holliday, Deputy Chief Executive, Porchlight, Kent

Undergraduate Communication Skills Workshop
Students at Girne American University-Canterbury organised and participated in their first undergraduate conference-style workshop August 2010.

As part of their overseas summer programme all students were enrolled in Communication Skills to advance their academic and spoken English. The special nine-week course was organised as part of the student programme and included planning, implementation, and evaluation of a simulated conference. Instructor Bahriye Kemal supervised and guided the students on the skills needed to organise for and present at the conference, with students successfully responding to the call for papers, writing abstracts, formulating the ’conference’ programme and presenting papers on varied research topics. They also chaired and participated in panels.
Congratulations to all for organising an enriching conference!
Students' Designs to Help Homeless
23 July 2010

STUDENTS from The American University, Canterbury, are helping improve the image of accommodation provided by Porchlight.
Architecture and design students met Porchlight's strategic manager, Yusupha Tunkara, and architect Karl Elliott of Clague to pool ideas about how they could make the rooms more user-friendly.
The initiative is part of a summer programme giving the students the chance to use their skills on behalf of Porchlight, which provides supported accommodation for homeless people around Kent.
The international students had travelled from the university's home campus, Girne American University in Cyprus.

Summer semester begins!
GAU welcomed students for summer semester July 2010.

During the first week international students arrived from Turkey, Cyprus, Iran, Jordan, Belarus and other countries. They joined various programmes including English, Architecture and Design, International Relations, Business and Finance, and were housed in University accommodation (except for a few early arrivals who spent four days camping at the YHA in Canterbury.)
After the orientation, students were taken on a tour of Canterbury which included inducting them into the language, currency, banking systems, mobile phone requirements and other activities needed to aid settling in. All students were given a Student Handbook and Welcome Pack with maps, vouchers and other useful information.
In the evening, the architecture and design students joined Professor Marga Jann to take part in Evensong at Canterbury Cathedral.
Throughout the summer all students are welcome to participate in the programme of activities which the Design Department has planned (including architectural walks, visits to castles and lectures on historic and contemporary buildings).
The Business and English Departments also offer events and activities including paintballing, hiking and visits to London. Keep an eye on this page as we update it with photos of the students as they tour and enjoy the UK as part of their experiential-learning programme.

‘The orientation taught me about studying in the UK. Before the orientation I was very nervous but the orientation really made me feel comfortable. I really like Canterbury and the university. ‘
‘The orientation made me feel welcome and safe. I was informed about life in the UK and studying in GAU-C. Everyone here is fantastic so is the new university campus and its location. ‘
President of YODAK Visits the GAU Canterbury Campus
Professor Dr. Hasan Ali Bicak, the President of YODAK, visited the GAU Canterbury campus in the UK today. He held meetings with the President, Dr. Shel Hulac, faculty and staff members of the new campus. After a number of meetings, discussions and touring the facility he stated, ‘I am very impressed with the infrastructure and the whole investment.
It has all of the required facilities to provide quality education. With the staff recruited here and the support of faculty and staff of Girne American University in Cyprus, there is no doubt that the project in Canterbury will be a success. Canterbury has been a center of higher education for over 1,000 years and GAU expects to provide its added value to this long history.’ Professor Bicak has been in the UK on a private visit to various higher education locations in the UK and to attend an important workshop on accreditation.

Summer Language Program: Fun, Friendship & Learning
During the summer young people of different age groups will be able to learn and practice English. The programme runs a combination of social activities, exciting excursions, and fun evening entertainment while providing a unique opportunity to learn a language where it is natively spoken.
GAU-Canterbury (GAU-C) has been operational since October 2009 and offers courses to students from the Faculty of Business, the Foundation English Programme, and the Faculty of Architecture.
On October 1, 2009 GAU-C held an introductory meeting with local dignitaries. The meeting provided GAU the opportunity to present information about University plans for future growth in the Canterbury area and was followed by a delicious locally-sourced meal at the Chaucer Hotel.
