Canterbury and the surrounding area have a whole host of history and heritage for you to come and discover. Canterbury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a city keeping many of its old iconic buildings. The main historical attraction of Canterbury is the fascinating Christ Church Cathedral that takes you back to medieval times. The Cathedral which is a mixture of Romanesque and Perpendicular Gothic, is one of the world`s oldest cathedrals and includes an outstanding collection of twelfth and thirteenth century stained glass.
Canterbury has many other places of historical value and interest such as the medieval city walls, the modest Church of St Martin which is the oldest Church of England. St Dunstan`s Church, St Mildred`s Church, Canterbury Castle and the ruins of the Abbey of St Augustine.
The development of literacy, education and scholarship at the Abbey of St Augustine meant that Canterbury became the most important medieval centre of learning in England. Canterbury still remains a centre for education with 40.000 students studying in this fascinating city from all over the world.
