Visas and International Students
Non European Union (EU) and non European Economic Area (EEA) nationals are classified as international students and are required to obtain Visas to study in the UK from the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) at their local British Embassy or Consulate.

The length of the course that a student is studying will determine the type of visa they will require.

Students studying on courses less than 6 months in duration are required to obtain a 6 month Student Visitor Visa. Students on English Language courses can obtain visas for up 11 months.

Students studying on courses over 6 months in duration are required to obtain a Tier 4 General Student Visa of the Points Based System.
IMPORTANT It can take up to 6 weeks to obtain a visa. Please ensure that you apply in good time to allow for this period. |
Student Visitor Visa
The Student Visitor Visa is designed for students taking a short course of study in the UK. This type of visa is available to GAU Canterbury Study Abroad programme students and English language Foundation students.
Study Abroad Programme
Students from GAU Cyprus with a CGPA of 2.00 above wishing to study on the Study Abroad Programme at GAU Canterbury for one semester should obtain the six months Student Visitor Visa.

English Language Foundation Programme
Students on this programme can obtain a Student Visitor VISA for 1 or 2 semesters. There is no minimum English language requirement for this visa when on this course.

Student Visitor Visa applicants are required to show various documents to the UKBA. The GAU Canterbury Admission Office will require copies of these documents as part of the conditions of the Conditional Acceptance Letter.

Tier 4 General Student Visa of the Points Based System
Students studying on courses of over 6 months in duration are required to obtain a Tier 4 General Student Visa within the points based system. Students are required to obtain 40 points.

10 points are awarded for having sufficient maintenance funds (money) to cover course fees and living costs.
UKBA and, therefore, GAU Canterbury require applicants to prove that they have sufficient maintenance funds before issuing a Confirmation of Acceptance Letter. The current amount specified for Canterbury is £800 per month, or part of month.

30 points are awarded for having a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from an approved educational Tier 4 Sponsor, on a course at an acceptable level, and for having acceptable English language skills.
GAU Canterbury only issues applicants a CAS upon successful completion of the conditions set out in the Condition Acceptance Letter. The CAS will be contained within the Confirmation of Acceptance Letter. The English language requirements for this visa are part of the conditions for all GAU Canterbury degree programmes and are covered in the Conditional Acceptance Letter.

GAU – Canterbury cannot guarantee that an Applicant will obtain a visa, the decision lies solely with the UKBA.

HEALTH CARE
Medical Treatment
All Non EU students studying at GAU-Canterbury for 6 months or less will NOT be entitled to free healthcare provided by the National Health Service (NHS).
We strongly advise that you take out private medical insurance to cover any medical costs that may arise during your visit.
If you choose not to take out cover, a fee of £25 will need to be paid for any doctor’s appointment that you make.
All Non EU students studying at GAU-Canterbury for over six months are entitled to some free medical care with the National Health Service.
If you are studying for more than 6 months, you must ensure you register with a doctor’s surgery as soon as you arrive.

Student Refund Policy & Procedure
Refund Policy
Girne American University-Canterbury registration fee of 250 GBP is non-refundable.
For International Students
International students that are refused a visa are entitled to a refund. A refund request must be submitted within 30 days of the refusal. The Admissions Office will need the official visa refusal letter (Embassy / Council / High Commission originals only) and may request copies of every page in the applicant’s passport and the return of any acceptance documents we have issued.
Withdrawing from a Programme

The university will deduct 25% from fees for withdrawals made before the sixth week of a semester. Withdrawals made after the sixth week will not be entitled to a refund.
The university is required by law to report international students, who do not attend regularly or who withdraw from a programme of study, to the UK Border Agency.
Girne American University-Canterbury reserves the right to cancel a programme, or course, when there are insufficient applicants. In such cases students are entitled to a refund minus a non-refundable registration fee.
